Silversea Partners with ORCA to benefit conservation efforts and enrich guest experience

ORCA conservationists will travel on board select Silversea voyages to guide guests in collecting wildlife sightings data

London UK, 10 January – Ultra-luxury cruise line Silversea has today launched a new partnership with ORCA, one of the UK’s leading marine conservation charities.

Silversea is working with ORCA to enable guests to discover and engage with incredible marine life on their Silversea adventures and contribute to ORCA’s ongoing marine conservation work by helping to collect critical sightings data of whales, dolphins and porpoises.

ORCA conservationists will travel on board select voyages, complementing the extensive Silversea enrichment programme by sharing their knowledge of the rich diversity of marine life on these voyages.

ORCA has championed marine conservation for over 15 years and their mission is to give everyone who cares about whales and dolphins an active role in safeguarding their future.

“We strongly believe when guests travel with Silversea they become ambassadors for both the destinations and wildlife across the globe. Silversea is committed to responsible cruising and with our guests will ensure that generations to come can enjoy the wonders of our oceans,” said Erin Johnson, Silversea Marketing Director, UK and Ireland.

Lucy Babey, ORCA Head of Science & Conservation, said: “The entire ORCA team are incredibly excited to be working with Silversea Cruises, and this partnership will allow us to reach parts of the world we have never visited. This new programme will help us shine a light on some of the most diverse and beautiful marine spaces on the planet, making a significant impact in protecting the wonderful whales, dolphins and porpoises in our oceans.”

The whale watching voyages in partnership with ORCA complement the extensive Silversea enrichment programme. Through Silversea’s partnerships with Accademia Teatro alla Scala, The Peninsula Hotels and Royal Geographical Society with IBG, renowned artists, experts and guest speakers travel on select voyages enhancing the guest experience.

About ORCA
ORCA are one of the UK’s leading marine conservation charities with a mission to give everyone who cares about whales and dolphins an active role in safeguarding their future. They have coordinated a national network of volunteer citizen scientists since they were founded in 2001, using ferries and cruise ships as platforms of opportunity to collect critical data about whales, dolphins and porpoises.

ORCA’s research is used by government to inform UK & European marine conservation policy and they are a key voice in the UK marine conservation sector. This work culminated in the publication of the State of European Cetaceans Reports, a landmark series of publications analyzing citizen science data stretching back to 2006, with the most recent edition released in December 2017.

ORCA also deliver a far-reaching education & outreach programme, teaching tens of thousands of members of the public both on land and at sea. Public engagement work is critical in mitigating damage to the world’s oceans, and ORCA play a key role in raising awareness of wide-ranging threats whales and dolphins in Europe face.
